Score the Commentary: Calibrating the Evidence and Commentary Row

$5.00Price

Students know the rubric says “explain how the evidence supports the argument,” but most can’t see the difference between a 2 and a 3 until they score it themselves. This lesson gives them ten sample body paragraphs on JFK’s Inaugural Address and FDR’s “Day of Infamy” speech. For each paragraph, they decide the band (3–4 or 1–2), then the exact score, with a reveal and an explanation after each decision.

The paragraphs target the habits that keep students in the bottom half: quoting without explaining, naming devices without analyzing them, the “this is pathos because” formula, and big vocabulary that says nothing. Built-in pairs show the same quotation earning different scores, so students see that the commentary, not the evidence, decides the score.

Includes: a 36-slide projectable deck with speaker notes, an interactive practice page that embeds in Google Sites, a 9-page teacher guide and answer key, a student scoring sheet with a printable paragraph packet, and a revision follow-up with four model rewrites.

Best for: AP English Language and Composition, one class period plus an optional revision day.
